The Harlequins fly half made his Champions Cup debut as they succumbed to a narrow 34-27 defeat at home to the French outfit La Rochelle, making their debut in the competition.
However Smith was very impressive yet again as he showed great feet and skill in attack, while also converting all three tries while adding a further two penalties.
The 18-year-old was recently named in Eddie Jones' England training squad for the first time as his stock continues to rise after playing well at domestic level.
Quinnell, who played against Henson in his career, says Smith has ability that can be compared to the Welsh legend.
"He's not as big as Gavin. He can't make the tackles that Gavin does. But he has time on the ball and he has the confidence (like Gavin did)," Quinnell told Sky Sports.
"If something goes wrong he dusts himself off, gets back there and says: 'Don't worry, I'll show you next time'".
