Stuart Hogg excited by Scotland potential

Stuart Hogg excited by Scotland potential

Scotland's Stuart Hogg believes the team can do "something special" following Saturday's narrow defeat to New Zealand.

The Scots matched the All Blacks for most of the 22-17 defeat and Hogg almost inspired a famous victory, only for his late solo run to end in disappointment.

Next weekend sees Australia pitch up at Murrayfield and Gregor Townsend's men will be confident, having beaten the Wallabies in Sydney over the summer.

After a decade or so in the doldrums, Scotland have gradually improved in recent years and Townsend looks set to build on the progress made by his predecessor Vern Cotter.

Hogg admits he is excited by the potential in and around the squad and believes they could be on the verge of an exciting few years.

"If we're not going into every single game to win, then what's the point being here?" he said.

"For us that's long targets, but we take each game as it comes and concentrate on Australia and when the Six Nations comes around, we will concentrate on that.

"I truly believe that we're in a position to achieve something special. If we're not here to win, then there's the door [points towards door]."
