The Old Trafford and England central defender was hearing noises a couple of months ago the club were prepared to hand him a five-year-deal and wages of £150,000-per-week.
It is certainly the case that United boss Jose Mourinho has told the player that he is going nowhere, having stepped up to the plate this season as the Red Devils' most consistent defender.
Jones' present deal is up in June 2019, only further adding to the confusion over an apparent delay by the club's money men to sort out his future.
United sources insist there is no issue and Jones has absolutely no interest in playing anywhere else, having made 163 appearances for the Manchester giants since his £17m arrival from Blackburn Rovers back in 2011.
Mourinho is believed to feel the 25-year-old is now reaching his peak and can become one the best defenders in Europe if he can stay clear of the niggling injuries which have become a common occurrence in recent seasons.
There are a number of players in the United squad who are also waiting to hear on new deals, with Jones preferring his own situation is concluded before this summer's World Cup finals in Russia.
