Google won't reopen offices until summer 2021

Google won't reopen its offices for many employees until next summer.

The tech giant is set to extend its work from home option - which was brought in on a large scale due to the going coronavirus pandemic - through to June 30, 2021, for all roles which don't need to be in an office.

As first reported by the Wall Street Journal, the move will impact almost all of the company's full-time and contract employees - around 200,000 staff.

CEO Sundar Pichai is said to have informed everyone of the decision on Monday (27.07.20), weeks after Google delayed reopening its US offices following a surge of COVID-19 cases in a number of states.

Pichai previously suggested the search engine firm would look to bring workers back into offices from July 6, although this was later revised with people working from home until at least September 7.

Many companies have made similar changes due to the health crisis, and in May the CEO told Google employees they would likely be working remotely for the rest of the calendar year.

This has been pushed back further, with reports suggesting the decision was made partly due to uncertainty about school years.
