Claudia Sheinbaum, the President of Mexico, has announced plans to sue the technology giant, after Google recently chose to rename the body of water the Gulf of America.
Google made the change to its maps service for US users after President Donald Trump signed an executive order in January, calling for the body of water's name to be changed to the Gulf of America.
Sheinbaum subsequently wrote a letter to Google, urging the American technology firm to reconsider its stance on the issue. And in February, the Mexican President went one step further, threatening Google with legal action over the name change.
Sheinbaum, 62, has argued that Trump's controversial executive order only applies to the part of the continental shelf belonging to the US.
The politician - who previously studied in California - said: "All we want is for the decree issued by the US government to be complied with.
"The US government only calls the portion of the US continental shelf the Gulf of America, not the entire gulf, because it wouldn’t have the authority to name the entire gulf."
