Telegram agrees deal to incorporate Grok on platform

Grok is on the cusp of being incorporated into the Telegram messaging service.

The AI tool - which was launched in 2023 by billionaire businessman Elon Musk - is set to feature on the Telegram app over the next 12 months.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov wrote on X: "[fire emoji] This summer, Telegram users will gain access to the best AI technology on the market. @elonmusk and I have agreed to a 1-year partnership to bring xAI’s @grok to our billion+ users and integrate it across all Telegram apps [handshake emoji]

"[muscle emoji] This also strengthens Telegram’s financial position: we will receive $300M in cash and equity from xAI, plus 50 percent of the revenue from xAI subscriptions sold via Telegram [money emoji]

"Together, we win (sic)"

Telegram has also released a video on X, teasing Grok's incorporation onto the platform.

Despite this, Elon has warned that the deal between the two parties hasn't been officially signed.

In response to Telegram's announcement, the Tesla boss wrote: "No deal has been signed."

But then, Durov replied by insisting that the terms of the deal have already been agreed by both parties, suggesting that they simply need to put pen to paper on the contracts.

Durov responded: "True. Agreed in principle, but formalities are pending."

Despite this, media analyst Hanna Kahlert has questioned whether consumers would welcome the move.

Hanna told BBC News: "Users primarily still use social platforms to talk to their friends, and see their friends' updates.

"Adding AI into direct messaging inherently supplants that - it reduces trust between users and distracts from the current USP."
