Microsoft promises Windows 11 updates 'every months this year'

Microsoft is promising updates for Windows 11 "this month and every month this year".

The tech giant has offered more details about planned improvements and features for its operating system - which will include moving the taskbar, fixing RAM consumption and more - with plans to roll out the changes over the coming months.

Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft's head of Windows, wrote on X: "We will begin to preview initial changes detailed in our blog in builds with Windows Insiders this month and throughout April."

And Scott Hanselman - Vice President and member of technical staff at Microsoft - added updates will be coming "this month and every month this year".

In an official blog shared on March 20, the company had referenced timeframes like "this month", "throughout April" and "across 2026".

Davuluri wrote in the original post: "I want to speak to you directly, as an engineer who has spent his career building technology that people depend on every day.

"Windows touches more people’s lives than almost any technology on Earth. Every day, we hear from the community about how you experience Windows.

"And over the past several months, the team and I have spent a great deal of time analysing your feedback. What came through was the voice of people who care deeply about Windows and want it to be better."

He detailed "some of the initial changes" set to be previewed in builds with Windows Insiders.

These include more taskbar customisation "including vertical and top positions", and integrating AI "where it's most meaningful, with craft and focus".

This means the team are being "more intentional about how and where Copilot integrates across Windows, focusing on experiences that are genuinely useful and well‑crafted", while reducing the amount of "unnecessary" entry points for the platform.

They are also promising "more control" over Windows Updates, a faster and "more reliable" File Explorer, and "more control over widgets and feed experiences".

Other changes coming include a simpler and more transparent Windows Insider Program, and an "improved Feedback Hub".

Davuluri added: "The work is underway. You can expect to see tangible progress that you’ll be able to feel as you preview builds from us throughout the rest of the year."
