David Beckham urges Man Utd players to take inspiration from club's history

David Beckham hopes a documentary about Manchester United's 1999 Treble win can help the club out of their current troubles.

The former England captain was part of Sir Alex Ferguson's legendary Red Devils side that became the first English team to win the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in the same season 25 years ago and thinks that looking back to the past can encourage United's underperforming crop.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live at the premiere of the Amazon Prime documentary '99' on Thursday (09.05.24), Beckham said: "In all honesty, I think that anyone that watches this documentary and has a connection to United, that they’ll be inspired by it.

"It’s been a difficult time for the team over the last few years now but it was always going to be.

"When we were as successful as we were for the amount of years there was always going to be this time.

"Now, we feel it’s probably gone on for a little bit too long but it will mean something to these homegrown lads without a doubt because the homegrown lads actually talk about that moment in time so we hope it inspires them."

Gary Neville played alongside Beckham in the Treble-winning side and knows that United's illustrious history "can be your friend but also your enemy" when you are representing the Old Trafford club.

The former full-back said: "At the moment it’s really difficult. It mustn’t be easy for them having this history rammed down their throats and, to be fair, quite a few of us are on television and we’re talking about the team regularly so I can understand why that would be uncomfortable."

'99' is available exclusively on Prime Video on 17th May when all three parts will drop globally.
