Lennox Lewis 'delighted' to welcome new undisputed heavyweight champion

Lennox Lewis will be “delighted” to see another undisputed heavyweight champion.

The boxing legend’s 1999 victory over Evander Holyfield, which capped off his 44-fight career, made him the last undisputed heavyweight champion but unless there’s a draw on Saturday (18.05.24) night in Riyadh, either Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk will claim the accolade from him and he couldn’t be happier.

He told Boxing News magazine: “I will be delighted that there’s another undisputed champion because I believe records are there to be broken.

“I’m going to be happy that I held it for this length of time. Now I’ll challenge the next one to hold it for as long.”

But Lennox warned his successor they will find themselves in a “difficult” position.

He added: “Being undisputed champion is so difficult, because by the time you sit down and you’re enjoying it, there are three people saying, ‘I can beat you’, or there are three sanctioning bodies saying you have to box this guy. There’s a whole bunch of confusion.”

The 58-year-old former fighter insisted he’d still have had what it took to be undisputed champion in today’s era.

He simply said: “Absolutely.”

Asked to elaborate, he added: “No, no. That says it all.”
