Rio Ferdinand 'delighted' with footballer son

Rio Ferdinand is “delighted” his son is following in his footsteps.

The former Manchester United defender insisted he never “forced” 17-year-old Lorenz – his eldest child with late first wife Rebecca Ellison – to play football and would support him in whatever he chose to do, but he’s thrilled to see the teenager playing in goal for Brighton’s under 18s.

He told heat magazine: “I’m delighted, especially because it’s not something that I’ve forced him into.

“He’s chosen to go on this journey of trying to be a footballer and so we’ll support him as a family 100 per cent.

“But if he doesn’t make it, I’ll support whatever else he decides to do.

“As long as my kids want to get up, go out and work, I’m happy.”

Rio also has Tate, 15, and Tia, 13, with Rebecca and Cree, three, and 10-month-old Shae with spouse Kate, and he credits the support of his wife for allowing him to stay busy as a pundit and podcast presenter.

Asked how he balances fatherhood and work, he said: “You need a good wife to make sure everything works well.

“Kate is just incredible – I couldn’t do it without her.

“Also, they’re five great kids, which really helps.”
