Terence Crawford vs Canelo Alvarez: Don’t write off Crawford, Amir Khan warns

Amir Khan has warned Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez not to write off Terence Crawford ahead of their fight.

Canelo, 34, is set to clash with ‘Bud’, 37, for the undisputed super-middleweight world title on 13 September in Las Vegas, and Khan has cautioned Alvarez not to underestimate his opponent - who will be moving up two weight classes to face the Mexican boxer.

Speaking with Sky Sports about whether the fight would be easy for Alvarez, Khan, 38, said: “Not at all because [Crawford] is such a technical fighter, if he just boxed him technically and Crawford puts on the weight well, he's a big 147lb fighter. Massive difference in size. Size matters but let's see.

“We also know that Canelo's a bigger puncher. Has he got the same stamina? He seems okay when he fights. But it's tricky because is skill going to win that fight, or power?

“I'm not going to predict who's going to win but I know it will be a hell of a fight.”

Even so, Khan - who was knocked out by Alvarez inside six rounds during their spat in 2016 - admitted Crawford would be facing a daunting task with Canelo due to his sheer size and power.

Khan said: “When I was fighting Canelo, I was probably beating him on points but he was just so strong and so big.

“When I was hitting him, I could see that it wasn't affecting him. The guy was riding them and waiting for that one big shot which he caught me with and put me away.

“But is he going to catch Crawford with that shot?”

Still, Khan - who lost his WBO world welterweight title to Crawford in 2019 - emphasised the fight would be incredibly close, and warned Crawford also “looks unbeatable”.

He added: "When I fought [Crawford] he was probably stronger than me and I was a 147lb fighter for a very long time.

“At the moment, Crawford looks unbeatable and Canelo looks strong and especially fighting a smaller guy he looks unbeatable. So let's see how this plays out.”
