After returning to The Toffees in January following his tenure at West Ham United, the 62-year-old manager couldn’t push Everton through the Europa League - with the Blues crashing out of the competition in April following a 3-0 defeat to Lyon - but with Everton’s move to Hill Dickinson Stadium from Goodison Park and new owners coming in, Moyes has promised there will be a return to glory in Europe for the club.
Speaking with the BBC, he said: “Back at Everton, I’ve got to try and set the same sort of sights for Everton as well.
“In the early parts of my career when I was Everton manager, we did get to Europe quite regularly. I feel as if it has to be a target for us.
“We have an exciting new stadium to move to, lots of good things happening, new owners coming in.
“Maybe we can’t do it too quickly but we have to try and aim to get back up to those levels.”
Moyes had been awarded an OBE by the Prince of Wales on Wednesday (11.06.25), and thanked the Hammers - who had won the Europa League in 2023 under his tenure - for “playing a big part” in bringing him his honour.
He said: “I have to give thanks to everybody at West Ham because it probably played a big part in my award today as well.
“We had an incredible time at West Ham, we won a European trophy.”
Back at home, Everton came in 13th place in the Premier League with 48 points, while Liverpool won the Carabao Cup with 84 points.
Moyes insisted Everton had to “dream” about closing the gap on its rival club.
He told the Daily Mirror: “We stayed up then and we had a very good year after that. I have to hope somewhere that we can try to plan it to be the same.
“At West Ham, we had to stay up and in the first year I was asking, ‘How am I going to do this?’ Then the next year we ended up getting into Europe.
“I don’t know if it is dreaming, but the idea is to try to have that as my goal. How can I do it? If we are fortunate to get ourselves of this position and stay in the Premier League, then we have to try to target getting into a European position if we can.
“If we pull up short, so be it, but we will try.”
