‘A new season, fresh me!’ Phil Foden reflects on Man City’s Club World Cup win over Wydad AC

Phil Foden is “looking foward to the season now” following Manchester City’s victory over Wydad AC in the Club World Cup.

The 25-year-old midfielder helped secure the Blues their first win in their opening Group G game of the tournament by scoring an early goal and helping Man. City coast to a 2-0 victory against the Moroccan club in Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia.

Although he has struggled to put out a consistent performance in the past Premier League season, Foden has insisted he is back and ready to push the club to success.

He told Channel 5 after the game: “A new season, fresh me! [I’m] looking forward to the season now.

“The tournament is] very important, not just for me, but all the players. It is important to get your sharpness now in this big competition.

“Playing for a club like City, there are expectations to perform in every game. I've been used to that pressure. Last season was a bit rough for all of us, but it is about going again this season.”

As well as his second-minute goal, Foden assisted in Jeremy Doku’s volley into the net, securing Man. City the match.

Man. City manager Pep Guardiola praised Foden’s “really good” performance after describing his position on the pitch as a holding midfielder.

Foden - who was named Player of the Match following his impressive display - emphasised it was “really important” to start off the tournament with a victory.

Speaking with City TV, he said: “Yeah, really important to start off with a win.

“The pitch was quite dry at times, it was very hot. These things that we’re not used to, so we had to keep the ball a little bit longer sometimes and try to attack at the right time.

“So yeah, I’m happy with the result. Obviously there’s still a lot of things that we can improve. They had a few chances that we gave the ball away sloppily.

“But, it’s a great start. I’m just looking forward to the next game now.”
