Martina Navratilova calls for Emma Raducanu to hire a long-term coach

Martina Navratilova has implored Emma Raducanu to "commit" to a coach.

The British number one has played some impressive tennis since teaming up with Mark Petchey on an informal basis earlier this year – although his media commitments prevent him from taking on the role full-time – and Navratilova says she needs a permanent arrangement.

The tennis great told Sky Sports News: "Commit to a year, if you like the person, if you know them and what they can bring to your game, then you need to really buy in and stick with it and make sure you're doing your part as far as training, fitness, eating, all of that.

"She's got the talent and she did play better tennis against (Aryna) Sabalenka (at Wimbledon). She's going in the right direction now."

Raducanu has been through several coaches since arriving on the scene in 2021 and Navratilova has urged her to take a more long-term approach if she wants to replicate her US Open victory of that year.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion said: "She needs to stick with somebody longer because when you work with somebody, it takes a while for them to incorporate into their game and then get the results.

"When you start a new training regime, you don't immediately go faster or get stronger. I just think she needs to really take charge of her life, make sure that she's the one that's making all the decisions for herself, and then stick with somebody."

Raducanu previously claimed that she changed coaches so frequently as some have been unable to "keep up with her".

She said in 2023: "I ask my coaches a lot of questions. I think that on certain occasions, they haven’t been able to keep up with the questions I’ve asked, so maybe that’s why it ended.

"But yeah, that’s something that I’ve always done and I keep provoking, I keep asking questions to coaches and challenge their thinking as well. I’m not someone that you can just tell me what to do and I’ll do it. I need to understand why and then I’ll do it."
