Mariona Caldentey warns ‘dangerous’ Lionesses ‘have it inside them’ to beat Spain in Euro final

Mariona Caldentey thinks England’s Lionesses “have it inside [of] them” to beat Spain in the UEFA Euro 2025 final.

After England beat Italy 2-1 in a nail-biting semi-final, the Lionesses are due to face Spain - who bested Germany 1-0 in extra time - and the Spanish midfielder, 29, has warned “dangerous” England has what it takes to win the tournament if the team isn’t careful.

Speaking with the BBC after Spain’s victory over Germany, Caldentey said: “We knew it would be a really tight game. We have never beaten Germany before, and we have never been in a Euros final.

“It was against history, and we made it with a lot of effort. We go into the next one and we are so excited to play that final.”

Caldentey will be facing a handful of her Arsenal teammates in the final - including Chloe Kelly and Michelle Agyemang, who were instrumental in securing England’s win over Italy.

Although Caldentey admitted England hasn’t been at their best in the tournament so far, she insisted the Lionesses shouldn’t be ruled out.

Caldentey said: “I know a lot of them. I know the footballers they are, and I know what they can do. It will be a hard game.

“It's a final, so they are dangerous even though they can't maybe play the greatest football yet, but they have it inside them. It will be a hard but good game.”

Spain will be looking to repeat the success it had against England in the 2023 World Cup, in which they beat the Lionesses 1-0.

Even so, the Spanish women’s side hasn't ever won the European Championship, and Caldentey said the team would use this to spur them on in the final - which will take place on Sunday (27.07.25) in Basel.

She said: “It's something we have never won. It’s something we are missing, and we really want it as a team. That was our focus from the first day.

“We are really close, it's just one step more, one game more, and we are ready for that.”

She added: “With this team, you feel everything is possible.

“We have a really strong team, we are just ready, and we have the ambition to win. I think this is the year. Why not? We respect England, but we will go for it.”
