Ian Poulter warns Europe to expect 'raucous' Ryder Cup atmosphere

Ian Poulter has told Europe to expect a "raucous" atmosphere as they bid to defend the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

Europe will look to retain the trophy they won in 2023 against the USA in New York in September and Poulter says that captain Luke Donald and his team will be sternly examined at the event.

Poulter – a five-time Ryder Cup winner who often saved his best for the team event – told Sky Sports: "Away Ryder Cups are notoriously difficult. It's the same when they come to our home soil too. Home advantage is a big factor.

"Luke has got a venue in Bethpage Black that is going to be very loud, very raucous. We've had numerous events at that location in the past, so they certainly know what they are going to be in for."

Poulter believes that Europe will not need to change much from the team who triumphed in Rome two years ago as they bid for a first away victory since the miraculous comeback at Medinah in 2012.

The English golfer said: "The European team already looks strong on paper, and Luke will be happy with the current form of his players.

"The team looks very similar to what it did last time, so I wouldn't expect too many changes. Hopefully Team Europe can go on US soil and grab that trophy back."

Poulter thrived at the Ryder Cup during his career and relished being "a pain in the backside" to the Americans.

He said: "I wouldn't say I was there to wind the crowd up, or intentionally wound the crowd up, you can do that with your golf.

"If you hole putts at the right time, you become a real pain in the backside to them, and that was enough to wind them up good and proper."
