'There were about 20 fans': Zoe Aldcroft recalls England debut

Zoe Aldcroft played her first England game in front of “about 20 fans”.

The 28-year-old England captain admitted the excitement around this year’s women’s World Cup shows the sport has come along way since she secured her first cap back in 2016.

She told Britain’s Vogue magazine: “There were about 20 fans, mostly family and friends, and we were getting changed in marquees.”

Despite her nerves around the tournament, Zoe thinks they are a “good thing” for her and her teammates.

She said: “The nerves do kick in every now and then.

“But that’s a good thing to help us get ramped up for the biggest tournament of our lives.”

The Gloucester-Hartpury player hopes the Red Roses can encourage other girls to take up the sport.

She said: “The most important thing to us as Red Roses is that there’s a growth in young girls playing rugby, so we’ve got players that will take our places one day.. “We want to keep the momentum going.”

Zoe is proud of her “super strong” physique.

She said: “The fact that you can go on a rugby pitch and just put your full force into something? I find that amazing.

“I look at myself and think, ‘This is [built] to do my job that I absolutely love.’ I have to be super strong, super powerful

“If there’s anything in the house I can’t open, I will not ask my husband.”
