Laurie Canter feels 'awkward' when he's recognised

Laurie Canter finds it “awkward” when he gets recognised.

The 35-year-old golfer doesn’t often get spotted when he’s in public but if he’s approached by fans, he never knows what to talk to them about.

Asked the first time he got recognised, he told the new issue of Bunkered magazine: “At the local golf club probably, if that counts.

“I don’t get recognised very much but it’s just always awkward.

“I don’t know what to talk about!”

Despite his success on the green, Laurie wants to be known for more than his sporting prowess when he dies.

Asked the last thing he’d like written about himself, he said: “I’m not thinking of it as a golfer.

“Just a normal guy who loved his wife and kids and that you can have a bit of a laugh with.”

The sportsman confessed to having “lost” one of his clubs when he threw it in a fit of rage.

Discussing the last time he’d thrown a club, he admitted: “The 14th hole at Leopard Creek when I was playing in the Alfred Dunhill.

“There’s a hazard that runs across the front of the green and I’d already found it twice that week.

“After the third time, I threw the wedge into the trees and lost it.”
