Yokozuna Hoshoryu wins Grand Sumo Tournament

Yokozuna Hoshoryu was crowned Grand Champion at the thrilling finale of the Grand Sumo Tournament at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sunday (19.10.25).

The 26-year-old star emerged victorious following a gripping showdown against Yokozuna Onosato on the final day of the five-day event.

When asked how he planned to celebrate, he told the BBC: “I haven’t thought about that yet. But I’m going to think about it now!

“I had such a great time in London. If I get the opportunity to come again, I will.”

Asked if he had any advice for a young rikishi (sumo wrestler), he said: “Work hard to achieve your dreams.”

Hoshoryu was presented with the tournament trophy by Suneel Bakhshi, President CEO of Mizuho International PLC, CIB Head, EMEA in a ceremony held after the concluding bouts.

Ambassador Hiroshi Suzuki also took to the stage to present the Outstanding Performance trophy to Tobizaru Masaya.

Over five days, London’s Royal Albert Hall was transformed into a traditional sumo arena, complete with a purpose-built dohyo and Yakata roof.

More than 40 rikishi travelled for the tournament, which featured a dohyĹŤ-iri (ring entrance ceremony) and approximately 20 bouts of Sumo wrestling every evening.

This is only the second time in the sport’s 1,500 year history that the event has been held outside Japan.

The other time was in 1991, when it also came to the Royal Albert Hall.
