Deontay Wilder will have a ‘big problem’ if he faces Derek Chisora, Del Boy’s ex-trainer says

Derek Chisora’s former trainer Don Charles thinks Deontay Wilder will have a “big problem” if he fights Del Boy.

The Bronze Bomber, 40, has been linked to Chisora in what would be Del Boy’s 50th and final professional fight later this year, but Charles has warned Wilder would be making a mistake if he were to get in the ring with the former heavyweight champion.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Charles said: “I wouldn't consider Derek, irrespective of where he is in his career, I wouldn't choose him as a comeback fight or a warm-up fight.

“Wilder, especially in his last few fights, certainly shouldn't choose Derek Chisora. Nevertheless, if it's real, let it be.”

Following his victory over Otto Wallin, 35, in February 2025, Chisora has been eyeing a potential trilogy fight with Dillian Whyte, 37, or a shot at Fabio Wardley’s, 31, WBO title for his final career bout.

Meanwhile, Wilder is targeting a clash with Oleksandr Usyk, 39, for later this year, but Charles believes that plan could be wiped off the map if he came to blows with Chisora.

He said: “It's a fan friendly fight because of their styles. You’ve got a renowned puncher [Wilder], questionable what he's got left.

“If you ask my opinion, a puncher will always be a puncher. Depending on who Wilder has in front of him, stylistically, would they give him that room to detonate that bomb?

“I believe if he fights Chisora, Chisora will not be on the outside to get tagged with that.

“Wilder is going to have a big problem.”

If the Wilder-Usyk bout does not materialize, The Cat has expressed his interest in fighting Agit Kabayel, 33, instead.

Usyk’s manager Sergey Lapin told talkSPORT Bet Slot site: “In today’s heavyweight top division there are no ‘safe’ opponents, every top-level guy is a threat.

“Kabayel is definitely a possible option. We see how Germany reacts to these fights, the stadiums they can fill, and how strong that market is.

“Stylistically he can be tricky too. Pressure, pace, physicality. It would be a big European fight with strong business potential.”

Lapin added “conversations and negotions [are] happening” with Wilder, but “no final decision” for a fight with Usyk has been made yet.

He said: “We’re moving calmly and professionally, when everything is agreed, it will be announced officially. We are only considering the biggest and most logical options, fights that truly create an event, not just another name.”
