Google Maps quietly removes media playback controls on Android

Google has quietly removed in-app media playback controls from Google Maps on Android.

As reported by 9to5Google, the feature - which allowed users to manage music or podcasts directly within the navigation interface - was previously accessible by linking a preferred media app, such as Spotify, YouTube Music, or Apple Music, within Google Maps’ settings.

Once connected, users could control playback without leaving the navigation screen.

However, the option to add or manage a media app has now disappeared from the settings menu, and existing playback buttons have been removed.

Android Police noted that users have been reporting the absence of the feature since the latest update, with many expressing frustration over its removal.

While Google has not released an official statement, the company appears to be encouraging users to rely on the native media controls in Android, such as the notification shade or the lock screen, instead of in-app integrations.

The removal of media playback controls marks the end of a feature introduced back in 2018, designed to provide safer, hands-free music and podcast navigation while driving.

At the time, Google highlighted the convenience of keeping media and maps on a single screen.

It remains unclear whether this change is permanent or part of a broader redesign of Google Maps’ interface.

Some users are hoping the feature could return in a future update, especially as in-car infotainment systems like Android Auto continue to emphasise integrated multimedia experiences.

For now, Android users will have to switch between Google Maps and their media apps or use system-level controls for playback - a move that some critics say is a step backwards in terms of usability.
