Samsung and OpenAI announce strategic partnership to boost advancements in global AI infrastructure

Samsung and OpenAI have announced a wide-ranging partnership aimed at accelerating the development of global artfificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, with plans spanning semiconductors, data centers, and even floating platforms.

The agreement, confirmed through a letter of intent signed in Seoul, brings together multiple Samsung divisions - including Samsung Electronics, Samsung SDS, Samsung C+T, and Samsung Heavy Industries - alongside OpenAI.

Samsung Electronics will serve as OpenAI’s strategic memory partner, supplying advanced semiconductor solutions for the company’s Stargate project, a global AI data center initiative.

With OpenAI’s demand for memory projected to reach nearly 900,000 DRAM wafers per month, Samsung says its lineup of high-performance, energy-efficient memory products will help meet the challenge.

Samsung SDS will collaborate on the design and operation of the Stargate AI data centers while also offering enterprise integration services.

The firm has also signed a reseller partnership to deliver ChatGPT Enterprise to Korean companies.

Meanwhile, Samsung C+T and Samsung Heavy Industries will work with OpenAI on the development of floating data centers - a novel approach that could reduce cooling costs, address land scarcity, and lower carbon emissions.

They will also explore floating power plants and control centers as part of the initiative.

Young Hyun Jun, vice chairman and CEO of Samsung Electronics, described the deal as a landmark moment: “By combining Samsung’s semiconductor leadership with OpenAI’s pioneering work in artificial intelligence, we can build the infrastructure to support the next era of global AI innovation.”
