Facebook aspires to deliver 'credible and accurate information'

Facebook is determined to deliver "credible and accurate information" to its users, according to Mark Zuckerberg.

The 35-year-old billionaire - who co-founded the tech giant - has seen his company emerge as one of the world's go-to websites for news information, and Zuckerberg is keen to deliver accurate news reporting.

In a blog post, he said: "We're focused on making sure everyone can access credible and accurate information."

More specifically, the Facebook boss revealed that the social network platform has been working with health authorities in order to co-ordinate their response to the coronavirus.

In fact, any search for the life-threatening virus now produces a pop-up directing users to the World Health Organisation or to local health authorities.

What's more, Zuckerberg confirmed that Facebook has given free ads to the World Health Organisation to inform people about coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Facebook previously announced it was hiring "community reviewers" to assist with fact-checking.

The tech firm announced new measures to tackle the spreading of fake news on the social media app, by recruiting employees who will scour posts and "flag" anything that "isn't corroborated" to their fast-checkers.

In a blog post, Facebook product manager Henry Silverman explained: "For example, if there is a post claiming that a celebrity has died and community reviewers don't find any other sources reporting that news - or see a report that the same celebrity is performing later that day - they can flag that the claim isn't corroborated.

"Fact-checkers will then see this information as they review and rate the post."
