Space startup offers moon holidays with seven-figure deposits

A California technology start-up is offering travellers the chance to reserve a future holiday on the moon.

Galactic Resource Utilization Space, known as GRU Space, says it plans to build habitable accommodation on the lunar surface, allowing paying guests to stay on the moon within the next decade. While humans last walked on the moon more than 50 years ago, the company believes commercial lunar tourism could begin as early as 2032.

The start-up has outlined a multi-phase development plan that includes testing inflatable structures on the moon in 2031, before launching what it describes as lunar hotels the following year.

According to GRU Space, the accommodation would be built on Earth and transported to the moon using a heavy lander.

Each unit is designed to host up to four people for multi-day stays.

The company's website states: “Designed to operate for 10 years, the hotel offers views of the lunar landscape and Earth, along with envisioned experiences such as surface experiences including Moonwalks, driving, golfing, and other activities.

While the concept remains firmly in the planning stage, GRU Space has already begun accepting reservations from prospective space tourists. Interested travellers are required to place a deposit ranging from $250,000 to $1 million, depending on the type of experience selected. The company has indicated that final pricing has not yet been confirmed but could exceed $10 million per guest.

Securing a place involves more than financial commitment. Applicants must submit personal details and, if selected, will be invited to take part in a private auction. GRU Space says invitations will be “tied to specific mission roles and lunar stays”, suggesting demand may far outstrip availability.

The company frames its ambitions as part of a broader vision for human expansion beyond Earth.

They said: “Humans cannot expand beyond Earth until we solve habitation on the Moon.

“When we solve off-world habitation, this is the ‘Promethean moment’ that will enable billions of human lives to be born on the Moon, Mars, and beyond.”

Looking further ahead, GRU Space plans to develop larger modular structures made partly from lunar materials, capable of housing up to 10 people.

The company believes falling launch costs and more frequent missions will make a permanent human presence on the moon viable, echoing wider ambitions across the private space sector to eventually support travel and settlement beyond Earth.
