Australians prefer to travel in home country

Australians prefer to travel in their home country.

A study by car rental agency Avis Australia has revealed Aussies like exploring their own country more than they like to head abroad, with a whopping 58 per cent revealing they travelled within their own state in the past year.

And with their keenness to stay at home, it is no surprise that a third (32 per cent) of those surveyed like going on road trips and have already been on at least one this year. However, nearly one in five (18 per cent) haven't even been travelling in the last 12 months.

When it comes to choosing where to go on holiday, for Australians, the most important thing is whether it will help them to escape their daily lives (56 per cent) and the safety of the destination (53 per cent) and the weather (50 per cent) complete the top three.

Cost is also important for Australians as 43 per cent admit they look to see how cheap the holiday is, whilst 39 per cent want something a bit different. Only 15 per cent of those surveyed worry about the eco-friendliness of their holiday.

Tom Mooney, Managing Director - Pacific, Avis Budget Group, said: "There's so much of our expansive, beautiful country that goes unexplored. At Avis Australia, we're excited to help Aussies get out and explore the best our diverse country has to offer."
