Brits are spending almost £600 per year on sports nutrition despite concerns about the industry.

New research by the all-natural sports drink and nutrition brand Perple found that people in the UK feel concerned (44 per cent), duped (34 per cent) and angered by the industry when the amount of artificial ingredients in products – causing energy spikes and crashes and gastrointestinal problems – are made clear.

Consumers of existing sports drinks and products have endured energy crashes (19 per cent), headaches (18 per cent) and stomach cramps (15 per cent) while four out of ten Britons realise that the sports and nutrition industry is full of misinformation.

Perple was developed at the University of Oxford to ensure that the balance of only natural ingredients was perfected to deliver exactly what the body requires for peak performance.

The brand is aiming to awaken exercise and sports enthusiasts from their reliance on synthetic and junk-fuelled products.

Four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel said: "I tried lots of products that promised to improve my performance. The reality is they didn’t and I was left with unpleasant side effects like stomach cramps. The industry for sports drinks, gels and powders is in desperate need of change. Perple represents exactly that change and that’s why I’m involved."

Perple Founder and CEO Jason Baits-Tomlin added: "The sports drink and nutrition industry is over-complicated, poorly regulated and awash with misleading information. It is time for it to evolve. Perple enables everyday enthusiasts and professional athletes, like Sebastian, to achieve optimum performance in a simple healthier way by using entirely all-natural ingredients, such as sweet potato, coconut water, brown rice and agave. Regardless of whether you are enjoying a weekend park run, or competing at the Paris Olympics, Perple is the most convenient, natural way to get your body the nutrition it needs, to be at your best, and feel great with absolutely no side effects."
