Nick Kyrgios to play at French Open for first time since 2017

Nick Kyrgios will return to the French Open for the first time in eight years.

The Australian tennis star returned to the tour earlier this year following a lengthy period out injured and will team up with compatriot Jordan Thompson - whose former partner Max Purcell was banned for 18 months last year for an anti-doping violation - in the men's doubles for his first appearance at Roland Garros since 2017.

Kyrgios told The Canberra Times newspaper: "The French Open was never really on the cards, but after the stuff with Max Purcell, Jordan was looking for a partner and he asked me if I wanted to play.

"We played at the French Open before, so it'll be good to get out there and play with another fellow Aussie and have a bit of fun."

Kyrgios will make his singles return after the French Open and has a busy grass-court schedule planned as he gears up for Wimbledon - where he reached the final in 2022.

He said: "I'm excited to get out there and play. We put a lot of work in - myself, [physiotherapist] Will [Maher], and the team. I feel good.

"Me and [coach] James [Frawley] have been on the court pretty much every single day. I'm hitting the ball well, it's just a matter of playing matches.

"With this part of my career I'm excited to travel the world and do some fun things whilst I'm out there."

Kyrgios' injury problems have cast doubt on his long-term future but the 30-year-old maverick isn't thinking about the end yet.

He said: "I don't want to speak it into existence [retirement], but I strongly believe I've done the work for my wrist to hold up.

"I'm towards the later stages of my career, for sure. I think with this injury, win or lose, it's just a bonus being out there."
