Xander Schauffele regrets 'unsavoury' Ryder Cup atmosphere

Xander Schauffele has described last month's Ryder Cup as one of the toughest weeks of his career.

The event at Bethpage Black was marred by the abuse of European players from the crowd and the two-time major champion admits that the atmosphere was unpleasant as the US fell to defeat on home soil for the first time in 13 years.

Schauffele said: "Yeah, there were some unsavoury things said at certain times.

"You know, I really wish we could have played better to have them cheer for us a bit more. New York's a tough place to play for anyone.

"I even got a few comments to play better. I'm not taking much personally when it comes to sort of what fans say."

Schauffele was one of the better performers on the US team during the Ryder Cup and reflected on the "tough" environment of his matches against European rivals.

The world number four said: "It's a tough thing. I've heard several things about a few of the things that were said.

"The guys I played with, (Viktor) Hovland and Bob (MacIntyre) the first day, or against, sorry, and then Jon (Rahm) and Sepp (Straka), I played Jon in individuals and then Jon and Tyrrell (Hatton) again I believe."

Schauffele has suffered an injury-disrupted year and plans to use the remaining tournaments to get some sharpness for 2026.

The golfer said: "I think it was a tricky year with injury and sort of lack of starts early on. Gaining some confidence, that would probably be the number one thing.

"Gaining a little bit going into the new year and trying to get back into good form."
