Ryan Shawcross pens fresh terms

Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross has put pen-to-paper on a new four-year contract.

England international Shawcross, whose previous deal expired next summer, was the subject of heavy interest in this transfer window with Newcastle United leading the race for his signature at one stage.

However, the 29-year-old centre-back has ended any possible deadline-day drama by agreeing a new four-year contract that ties him to the bet365 Stadium until 2021.

The Potters have also confirmed the departure of a defender with Germany international Philipp Wollscheid joining Metz after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.

He arrived at Stoke in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen, making 45 Premier League appearances, and the 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Wolfsburg after falling down the pecking order in the Potteries.
