Virtually visit The Taj Mahal

Visit The Taj Mahal from the comfort of your living room.

A new virtual tour of the iconic building in Agra, India is available on Google's Arts & Culture site, and allows you to have a birds eye view of the beautiful mausoleum.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1980s, the stunning building towers over the nearby landscape including the River Yamuna, which runs alongside it.

The Taj Mahal was commissioned in the 1600s by Shah Jahan as a memorial for his wife Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth. Construction on it began in 1632, with it finally being completely 16 years later in 1648. The surrounding buildings and gardens took another five years to be finalised, leaving the spectacle we see today.

Meanwhile, the Taj Mahal was recently named the most popular New7Wonders of the World on social media.

Explaining how the ranking was established, they shared: "Taxi2Airport.com, one of the largest taxi providers in the world, analysed the social engagement with the New7Wonders of the World in order to determine which wonder of the world is most popular on social media. They did so by looking at the number of Facebook likes, Twitter followers, Instagram hashtags and Pins on Pinterest. The results of this analysis were then ranked in the Social Engagement Index 2019 where special buildings and constructions were ranked on a 100-point scale."
