Kieran Tripper tells England to embrace World Cup expectation

Kieran Trippier says England shouldn't be afraid of expectation at the World Cup.

The Newcastle defender is part of Gareth Southgate's squad as the Three Lions look to end 56 years of hurt at major tournaments and Trippier believes England must enter the event thinking they can win the trophy after impressive performances on the big stage in recent years.

He said: "We shouldn't be afraid of going into the tournament saying we can win it. We set high standards by getting to a semi-final and a final of a Euros. Obviously, we want to go one step further to actually win a tournament.

"We all feel confident as a group, we've got a fantastic 26-man squad - unbelievable talent in there, a mixture of experience and youth. We shouldn't be going into a tournament saying we should be scared of saying we want to win it. That shouldn't be the case, we should go there with that winning mindset and don't be afraid to say it."

Trippier is confident that England will be able to cope with expectation as the players are constantly under pressure at club level.

He said: "If you look at nearly every player in the England squad, they are having to deal with that pressure every day. They are all playing in massive competitions anyway - Champions League, Europa League.

"So they are all under that pressure anyway and all dealing with it - coming away with England should be no different. We feel like we have a great squad to deal with the pressure. For me it's no problem - I want to go to that tournament to win."
